Rainy Weather Impacts – Outdoor Fencing Projects

Severe rain and thunderstorms can absolutely wreck your fence & deck; or even impact you from completing your outdoor project on time. Every year your fence is faced with Oregon’s harsh rainy conditions. At HB Fence, Decking & Construction, we pride ourselves on sharing with our customers how we sometimes handle these harsh conditions. It’s gives you DIYS some tips on how to protect or install a project you are currently working on, or maybe thinking about starting soon.

In the Northwest it’s not uncommon for freshly dug up fence post holes to fill up with water. Standing and saturated water can quickly plug up your post holes simply by seeping into the dirt. Even when you haven’t dug into a water line.

The problem with excess water is it can be harmful and impact your concrete to water mix ratio. The excess water will wash out your concrete mixture, leaving your fence post to set in simply sand and gravel.

As for the water’s effect on the posts, we use treated posts and add two inches of gravel to allow the water to escape from the bottom of the post. Sometimes, we recommend using galvanized post which will never rot or decay.

Once we have measured out and are ready to set the post, we will pump the water out with a small pump. If the water’s coming up from the bottom, we will use quick dry concrete. That’s a hydraulic cement which will set up under the water. We use a small amount to seal the bottom of the hole until we can get the concrete mixed and poured.
