Protecting Your Fence from Windstorms

Windstorms can be strong enough to knock down fences, leading to difficult and costly repairs. If a storm is on its way, learn how to protect your fence from wind damage.
Inspecting Your Fence
Inspect your fence for any loose posts, boards, or panels and repair if necessary. Fences tend to have a lot of rot near the baseline of the posts. Old fences are most vulnerable to high windstorms. Remove and reinstall any posts that appear loose in the ground. Fix loose or damaged fence boards or vinyl fence sections as they can break off during high wind gust.
Lock the Gate
If your area has been issued a storm warning, use a good lock on your gate to secure it into place. High winds will start to slam against the fence and can cause serious damage to your fence or even your home.

Vinyl Fencing

You can clean your vinyl fence with soap or plain tap water.  It is safe for your children and pets.  Unlike wood fencing, you won’t have to worry about sharp nails or wood splinters when your children touch the fence.
Vinyl fencing does not attract termites, pests, or insects that otherwise would contribute to fence deterioration.
Your fence will outlast most other types of fencing by decades.

Galvanized Screws

We use galvanized screws on every wooden project. The zinc coating on the galvanized screws helps prevent your fence from rusting, staining and discoloring the fence boards.
Galvanized screws will look much better in the end especially if left with a natural, unfinished look. The screws resist loosening up during wind storms. Nails will get looser as time goes on and can deteriorate and bleed onto the wood.
